The dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire following its defeat in the First World War left a considerably reduced Turkey, defined by borders in Anatolia and eastern Thrace. These were guaranteed by the Turkish War of Independence (1919–1922) and confirmed internationally by the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne.
