In the course of the 17th century, Livorno became one of the most important port cities in the Mediterranean region. Im Verlauf des 17. Jahrhunderts wurde Livorno zu einer der wichtigsten Hafenstädte im Mittelmeerraum. Zur Entwicklung des Hafens trugen maßgeblich sephardische Kaufleute bei, die als Teil eines Handels- und Kulturnetzwerks sephardischer Gemeinden Handel von der atlantischen Küste bis nach Indien trieben.
